Advanced Riders and Rockbrook Camp

Horse Riding Girl at Summer Camp

“Can I learn more advanced riding skills at Rockbrook Camp?”

The director of our riding program, Cara, places each camper who wants to ride at camp in a class with girls of similar ability, and assigns each camper an appropriate mount. With outstanding horses from St. Andrews College and Sweet Briar College, and with skilled instructors who work with horses and teach riding year-round, Rockbrook horseback riders are set to learn. It’s so great to ride an excellently schooled horse, and have fresh, appropriate tution for your riding. Advanced riders can learn to post the trot, canter and jump. No matter what your level, the horse riding program at RBC is ready.

Hi! I was wondering how much i will get to ride this summer at camp? I can trot, canter, jump very well. Last summer I got afternoon lessons and was very disappointed to only ride once in two weeks. Is there a way to get morning lessons?

    • rbc says:

      Hi Claire,

If you are REALLY excited about riding, we can provide a lesson just about every day (except Sunday) at Rockbrook. There are some exceptions, but that can be the goal. We have fantastic horses and really great instructors, so you can learn a lot and have a great time with friends. But as you know, there’s a ton more to Rockbrook. We’re not a “horse only” camp… There’s so much more fun going on around here. Anyway, I hope that helps!

I am 11. I LOVE horses. I have been riding for seven years. I am a advanced dressage rider. I am looking for a camp where you sleep, eat, and breath horses.Would this be the right camp for me?

    • rbc says:

      Hi Hadley,

Rockbrook is a camp where you can ride about 5 days a week, and enjoy really great horses and riding instructors, but we are not a “horse only” camp. We want to have all kinds of fun, so everyone does more… things like archery, rock climbing, swimming, kayaking, crafts, and so much more. Sure you ride a lot, but you also have a great time with friends doing tons more!

  5. Margaret says:

I am 11 and have been doing advanced dressage is there a good dressage riding camp part?

hi i’m almost thirteen and have been riding for almost six years. I know the basic W/T/C and can jump up to three foot jumps. I’ve been trying to find the right camp were i can be around horses almost all the time. How often do campers ride? How much time does each camper get with their horse? And do you think your program would be right for me?
    Thanks!

Hi I am almost thriteen and I have been riding for four years and have learned walk, trot, canter, and to do small jumps. I was wondering if this camp could teach more jumping skills. Im alittle skiddish at first but I get use to it quickly. Would this camp be good for me?

    • Jeff says:

Hi Nikki. We have riders with all levels of experience, and classes designed so that everyone learns to ride better and have fun at the same time. We have plenty of other activities to do too, so you’d have lots of things to keep you busy. Browse all around our Web site and you’ll get a good sense of RBC. Only you can decide if it looks good to you! Best of Luck!

hi i was wondering if this camp was right for me i have 16 horses at my dad’s farm and none of them are jumper’s i have mostly barrel racer’s and waunt to learn how to jump i am learning how to post the trot my mom’s teaching me but we don’t know if this was the right camp or if i should try for a different camp. i am i quick leaner and don’t waunt to be stuck with kids that’s not as skilled as me or a lot younger then i am and i’m 14 so just woundering your thoughts

    • Jeff says:

Hi Kassandra Jo. We always have different level riders at camp and so place them in different lessons depending on their skills and experience. If you know a lot and can do a lot, then you’ll be with other girls who are likewise more advanced riders. They also usually are the same age.

  9. kara says:

if your in the horse class will you be asigned to one horse or more

    • Jeff says:

Hi Kara, You are assigned a horse for each class that you take. Since you can ride several times each week, you can request different horses or keep one that you like.

  10. sabrina says:

do you have to bring your own saddle? or does the camp provide saddles, as well as horses. i am very interested in this camp, i have been looking for a high quality sleepaway camp. i have looked at others, but most of them dont really teach you anything like the lessons i get back home? and what height do your horses vary from? i am just over 5.6, and have super big legs. i have a 16.3 selle francias at home that i do equitation with.

    • Jeff says:

Hi Sabrina. Rockbrook provides saddles for each of it’s horses because they are fitted individually. Our horses range from an 11.2 Welsh Pony to many 17+ hand warmbloods. We’re so excited that you have found Rockbrook. We do offer an excellent riding program and teach quality lessons at all of our sessions.

  11. Danielle says:

Can you come to Rockbrook and just ride all the time? Or do you have to do other activities?

    • Jeff says:

HI Danielle. While you can ride almost every day of the week, and spend extra time helping with the horses, Rockbrook campers always do other activities as well. There’s about 25 different ones to choose from!

  12. jessica says:

and i was wondering how long does camp last is it over night

  13. Morgan says:

I think your definition of advanced is a bit different than mine. I already know how to post, canter, and jump. And are you allowed to just ride around all day, or are there just lessons, and no free horse time. I was also hoping that I might be allowed a more frisky/ fast horse, considering i’ve been riding all my life. I really would like to know how the horseback riding works. Thanks.

    • Jeff says:

Morgan, If you are really interested in the riding program at Rockbrook, you can give the office a call and leave a message for Cara, our Equestrian Director. She’ll be able to give you more details about what we mean by “advanced horseback riding.” Thanks!

      • jessica says:

well i was just wandering can u bring your own horse because i have a saddlebred that does pretty good on trails she spooks just a little but in the arena she wonderful she doesnt like to be sinched and is a little bit jazzy because she is a saddlebred and if i do come to camp and if u do allow me o bring her just want yall to be prepared on the trails she has a very fast walk

        • Jeff says:

Hi Jessica. Your horse sounds really great, but we don’t let girls bring their own horse to camp. We have lots of our own great horses to ride. Plus at camp you can change mounts if you want as the session goes along. Oh, and yes, the camp sessions last 2, 3 or 4 weeks at a time.

  14. Sarah says:

Hi!I was looking for a summer camp in North Carolina this year when we come down to visit family.I take jumping and dressage lessons with my own horse. And my dad and I were wanting to take him with us this summer because I won’t be able to survive a month without him!haha!thanks

  15. brittany says:

Is this camp for women also who are about 22 or so that want to learn and experience more horse related activities?

    • Jeff says:

Hi Brittany, Rockbrook is really a summer camp for kids, for girls who are between six and sixteen. We don’t have older women attend camp unless they are hired to work. Check out the rest of the site and you’ll see what I mean.

  16. Kara says:

Is this camp for advanced riders? Im pretty good and want to increse my abilities and not have beginners slow me down.

  17. RBC says:

Because we have so many excellent horses and our barns are kept full, we don’t let girls bring their horses to camp. For even advanced riders, one of the great benefits of camp is getting to ride new horses. It’s a way to really improve your riding skills.

  18. Maren says:

can you bring a horse if you are advanced?

  19. RBC says:

Rockbrook offers both advanced and beginner classes. They aren’t mixed, so you’ll be in a class with other girls riding at the same level. So no worries! :-)
