Alix Edmondson Martinez

November 30, 1973 – January 26, 2019

Alix Edmondson Martinez was a beloved Rockbrook girl whose time in the heart of a wooded mountain was too short. She formed close bonds with so many other campers and quickly became friends with numerous alumni at reunions. Her cheerful spirit and mischievous sense of humor were infectious.

As we remember Alix, her love of camp is unmistakable. From when she first arrived at Rockbrook in 1984 and for the next seven summers, she came to love this camp, the people she met here, the beauty of the natural environment, and simply the feeling of contentment and belonging it provided.

“I will always know I belong here,” she wrote.

Scholarship Fund

To honor Alix and to celebrate her love of Rockbrook, her family wishes to create a special fund devoted to awarding an annual scholarship for a girl to attend camp— The Alix Edmondson Martinez Scholarship Fund. It will provide funds that will allow, each year, a girl to attend camp and experience the same warm friendships, dips in the mountain lake, silly skits in the cricket-filled evenings, and sweet camp songs to carry in her heart. We know how much Rockbrook meant to Alix, and now hope this fund will help carry that love forward.

We will house the fund as part of The Redbird Endowment, our permanent trust dedicated to making a Rockbrook experience possible for under-privileged children. The Endowment is managed by the Community Foundation of Western North Carolina, who invests donations allowing the trust to grow over time.

Only earnings from the Endowment will be used for scholarship awards, ensuring that generations of girls in the future will benefit from the Endowment. Funds from the Endowment cannot be used for Rockbrook’s general operating budget.

Please consider making a charitable gift to the Alix Edmondson Martinez Scholarship Fund. Your tax-deductible donation will directly support this special program and help make it possible for a deserving child to attend Rockbrook.

It is the generosity of Rockbrook’s alumnae, friends and family of Alix that will create this program and sustain its mission to help girls experience the wonder of camp.
