A Rockbrook Wedding!

We are so excited to share great news about two of our 2010 Rockbrook staffers. Mallory Schaffert and Josh Carter, both on the adventure staff, tied the knot last Friday in the heart of a wooded mountain. Mallory led our climbing trips last summer and Josh took out many paddling trips with his father Clyde Carter, our Adventure Staff Director. Like camp owners Sarah and Jeff Carter, their ceremony took place at camp in the Hillside Lodge and a reception followed in the dining hall. It was a celebration filled with great mountain music and square dancing. Everyone had a blast and we wish Mallory and Josh the best as they begin their new life together!

Berry Picking in the Blue Ridge Mountains
Rockbrook is located near several state and national parks such as Pisgah and Dupont. Several times a week, campers take backpacking and hiking trips to enjoy all these gorgeous places have to offer – including berry picking!

Tower at RBC
Rockbrook girls love the to climb the Alpine Tower, complete with a “corporate ladder”, swinging logs and more.

You can do it!
The climbing staff, or “Climbing Heroes,” are just that. To be a climbing instructor, not only do you have to be safety-conscious and knowledgeable about the set-up procedures, but you also have to be able to know how to encourage campers and help them reach their individual goals.

Cherie to the Rescue!
Cherie was part of our Adventure trip staff this past summer. She is currently a student at Brevard College. She heard about Rockbrook through Clyde Carter, who is the Chair of the Outdoor Department throughout the school year and also Rockbrook’s Outdoor Director during the summer. Before coming to camp, Cherie did a 21-day paddling and backpacking trip with school. She also received a certificate in Wilderness First Response and Water Safety. Cherie lived at camp, in the cabin known as “Dilly”, that is built right next to a creek.

Blast Off!
Throughout the summer, campers and staff often serenaded Cherie by singing, “Cherie, Cherie Baby”, usually when she was coming up to announce a rafting, climbing or backpacking trip after a meal. Her main duties included packing the food, raft guiding, belaying and making sure campers stayed safe. When she wasn’t out on a trip, she helped at the Alpine Tower, and occasionally offered roll clinics in the lake. And of course, in the evening she’d dress up for that night event!
