Fun Activities for Camp Counselors

Being a camp counselor at Rockbrook is a lot of things. It’s a job that requires you to be a well-rounded mentor, someone who is part friend, part older sister, part parent, and part teacher. It means wearing lots of hats, cheerfully accepting a wide range of responsibilities. It definitely requires hard work, creativity, patience and stamina. The pace of camp life is full speed!

But perhaps surprisingly, for the counselors at Rockbrook, working at camp is also unbelievably fun. This is because our staff members simply love being around kids. They enjoy helping the campers with their activities, participating along the way. They get a huge kick from dressing up, singing songs, playing games, and generally being pretty silly— just like the campers. Cannonball off the diving board? You bet. Trip down the slip ‘n slide? Oh yes. Wear a Super Hero costume to dinner. Definitely. Rockbrook counselors are the kind of people who wouldn’t think of passing up a chance to join the girls in whatever they’re doing.

That’s why it’s such a blast to work at camp. It’s nonstop action. It’s being right smack in the middle of a hugely fun time for everyone.

Rockbrook Garden

This weekend, with the help of Tara Millington and Catherine Goodnight, the first seeds were planted in the garden. What you don’t see yet in this photo are the carrots, beets, beans, corn, onions, peas and more that will soon be sprouting! This is actually the same place that the old garden use to be many years ago. The soil is top notch!

Rockbrook Camp Garden Activity

This summer, campers will be able to sign up for garden workshops, where they might even get to eat right out of the garden! Both campers and counselors can pitch in during Twilight (the time after dinner and before evening program) to water and care for the garden.

A History of Dance

Interpretive dance, old school style

Apparently, campers used to do interpretive dance on the lawn in front of the Carrier House. It’s hard to tell if they are really being serious, or, in true Rockbrook fashion, they are just goofing around.

Like to get your groove on? Dance is still an activity at camp. If campers want to, they can be in the dance show, which takes place during the intermission of the play at the end of the session. Of course, there’s lots of dancing at camp – even outside the activity periods – whether at a midnight party, a square dance with boys, or perhaps at an 80′s dance party with just us girls!

Riflery

Haley teaching riflery

Riflery is definitely one of the most popular activities at camp. There’s nothing like aiming for the bullseye and pulling the trigger! AND, let’s not forget the tournaments with Camp Carolina for Boys.   To be an instructor, you don’t have to be an expert marksman yourself (although that’s great!) because there is a pre-camp training to learn the firing commands, important safety information, and how to take care of the equipment. Being able to clearly communicate and being safety-conscious are the most important traits of a riflery instructor.

Here’s a riflery song at RBC (to the tune of “Splish Splash I was Taking a Bath”):

“Bang! Bang! I was shooting a gun

On a sunny Rockbrook afternoon.

So c’mon everbody and give it a try,

Mayb you’ll get lucky and get a bullseye.

Bang! Bang! that’s using your aim

And that shows riflery is your game, BANG!”
