    Hello lovely counselors-
Slip on those sandals, slide on those sunglasses, and shimmy on that sun block because summer is almost here! Each and every one of you makes up our wonderful, fantastic, and superb staff. We are so excited to see old faces and meet new ones in just two short months. Now that we are all one big family let’s get to know one another!

Please tell us your name, where you go to school, what year this is for you at camp, and what you are most excited about for the summer. Also include any quirky or fun facts about yourself.

    I’ll start…

Hey, hey everyone. It’s Jeff, one of the few guys at Rockbrook. Here’s my Rockbrook story.

After graduating from Davidson and teaching high school for 3 years in Athens, GA (Athens Academy), I first came to Rockbrook in 1988 to be the hiking and climbing guide. At the time, I was just starting graduate school, so taking outdoor trips at camp was a nice way to earn some money for school, and as it turned out, a nice break between all those years in Boston and Chicago (nine in all… yikes!). I really enjoyed being at Rockbrook and came back just about every summer, though I took a couple of them off to do research in Nigeria.

One unusual thing about my RBC history is that I met my wife Sarah here. She too worked many summers at camp, and over the years we got to know each other. As those things sometimes go, and after dating (long distance!) for 4 years, we got married at Rockbrook in August, 1996. We had the ceremony in the upper hillside lodge, and the reception in the dining hall. It was great fun having our friends stay at camp.

Before becoming one of the RBC directors, I was a college professor who taught Anthropology and Comparative Religions courses. That’s what you’re supposed to do when you finish a Ph.D. I taught at Vanderbilt, Davidson and the University of South Carolina. So if you’re interested in that kind of stuff, we should talk!

Then in 2000 Sarah and I moved to Brevard to start the Castle Rock Institute at camp. Jerry Stone (the previous owner and director of camp) and I had an idea to create an outdoor education program for college students where they would come to camp for a semester, take four humanities courses, and go on tons of adventure trips… even to Australia and New Zealand. http://www.castle-rock.org

Sarah and I became the directors at Rockbrook in 2006, so this will be our 6th year in that role, even though we started working here back in the 80s!

I am also a lucky Dad for two girls: Eva (8) and Lily (4). If you haven’t met them, you will this summer! I put a couple of photos of them in my album. They are awesome fun kids, so I hope you enjoy getting to know them.

Every summer I look forward to camp starting up. It’s such a nice change from “ordinary life.” Being outside most of the time, staying really active, hanging out with super enthusiastic people (kids and staff!), all the special fun events—it’s really a great thing. It will be great to see you back at camp, and if you’re new this summer, I look forward to meeting you.

Hi! I’m Sofie and I am so excited to work as the Staff Director this summer. I recently graduated from the University of North Carolina at Asheville with a degree in Sociology and a license to teach High School Social Studies.

I began working at Rockbrook in 2009 as a lifeguard and will always have a soft spot in my heart for the waterfront.

My favorite Rockbrook activities include completing my health, tax, and voluntary disclosure forms before camp begins, following the dress and grooming policy, and hiking to Rockbrook falls!

Rockbrook campers are the most charming, funny, adorable young women that you will ever meet. It is truly the perfect place to spend your summer.

Pull out your party hats because this summer is going to be wonderful!

    Hello everyone!

I can’t wait to meet you all. Sofie has been telling all of the rest of us in the office how fantastic you all are! We are going to have a blast this summer, and I can’t wait to get started.

Here’s a little more about me… I’m 27, and I grew up in Georgia and started at Rockbrook in 1993 as a Junior camper. I became addicted and haven’t ever left! Now, I am the Program Director. My favorite camp activities are any of the crafts, riflery and archery. I graduated from Georgia Tech… GO YELLOW JACKETS! I have a new love of running, as I just ran my first 10K. And I love living in Brevard. It’s a great town, and you will love being part of it this summer.

During the summer, you will see me doing all kinds of crazy camp things… dressing up in nutty attire, driving the camp bus, doing announcements, organizing special events, scheduling activities and the calendar, running around camp in a hurry, chatting with parents, etc… Feel free to come find me with any questions. I live in FBI, The Fanny Bell Inn, up behind the dining hall. Then, during the off-season, I travel around showing the camp movies to interested families, planning out the summer schedule, ordering supplies and camp gear, and assisting in getting our fun campers registered.

    See you all very soon!

Hi everyone! I’m so excited this is up, I can’t wait to meet all of you :)

I’m Ashley (from Spartanburg, SC), finishing up my sophomore year at the University of South Carolina where I study Elementary Education. This will be my first summer at Rockbrook but I am not new to the camp experience, I have attended every camp in the book from weather camp (yes, weather camp. I was in 3rd grade! haha) to music camp to girl scout camp. You name it, I’ve done it! I’m most looking forward to meeting all of the Rockbrook crew and all of the awesome campers that are going to be there this summer. I love to read, know ridiculous amounts of movie trivia, and am obsessed with everything Italian since I studied there last summer.

Add me on Facebook if you want, yay new friends! :)

  • Avatar Image Emily Johnson said 1 year, 1 month ago:

Hey folks!! My name is Emily Johnson and I’m going to be a “newbie” counselor this summer at Rockbrook!! It’s not my first rodeo, but first one of this category! I’ve loved the camps I’ve attended, but know this one will be the best in my life.

I’m currently making my way through my sophomore year at the University of South Carolina, where I am studying biology with an emphasis on pre-med. I absolutely love people, especially kids, and hope to fulfill my dream of becoming a pediatric neurosurgeon. I love reading, playing guitar, and being spontaneous. I’m not exactly used to being on stage, but that actually is one of the many things I’m looking forward to. I look forward to meeting EVERYONE and can’t wait to meet some new sisters :)

Random facts: I have been featured for about 3 seconds on MTV’s MADE. I’ve been playing guitar for about 12 years now, and will bring it along with me this summer so we can have some campfire music! I have been playing tennis off and on for about 8 years, although unfortunately I’ve been a little rusty lately. But, I hope to be helping out there. I will go wherever y’all think I’m best suited for :)

If this post is just so riveting and you’d like to contact me, feel free to. I’m on Facebook and you can find me in the South Carolina network :) Or, you can call/text me at 803-331-1203 or email me at johns455@email.sc.edu

  • Avatar Image Greer Theus said 1 year, 1 month ago:

Hey y’all! My name is Greer Theus and this will be my first year as a counselor, but I spent four awesome summers at Rockbrook as a camper and can’t wait to be back! I am 19 years old and am a freshman at Washington and Lee University in Virginia, where I am majoring in history and education. However, I grew up in Columbia, SC and am a die-hard Gamecock fan!

I love music, especially playing the guitar and singing, and like Emily I am definitely bringing my guitar to camp with me. I go to school in the mountains and LOVE hiking.

I can’t wait to meet all of y’all and spend an awesome summer at camp. So excited!

  • Avatar Image Jane Pierce said 1 year, 1 month ago:

    Hello, ladies (and Jeff)!
My name is Jane and this will be my 7th summer at Rockbrook. I started as a middler and have now been a middler counselor for two years. (Middler ’til I die!)
I am from Sanibel, FL and am finishing up my sophomore year as a fine art photography major at the Corcoran College of Art + Design in Washington, D.C.. I am so thankful to be able to carry over my love for photography into my summers at Rockbrook as a teacher of Photo Fun. I hope to be a fashion photographer someday, but don’t let my passion for fashion fool you, my favorite camp attire includes camo craziness for counselor hunt and neither ice-cold Nantahala river water nor being attacked and subsequently covered in shaving cream can stifle my Rockbrook spirit!
I absolutely cannot wait to reunite with the old Rockbrook gals and am so excited to welcome new staff and campers, too!

Please feel free to add me on facebook or e-mail me at janehpierce@gmail.com.

I LOVE CAMP! See y’all soon!!!

Hey y’all! I am so excited for summer 2011! My name is Elizabeth Fowlkes and I am a freshman studying Communications at Auburn University, from Oxford, Mississippi. I LOVE ROCKBROOK! I will be returning for my 9th summer, and I cannot wait! I will be working as a lifeguard down at the lake. One of my favorite things about camp is meeting new people!! I am so excited (if you can’t tell.) Some (interesting?) facts about me: I am a member of Kappa Alpha Theta sorority, I work at a shoe store (danger), and this year I went to the National Championship game, Warrrr eagle! I also love reality TV. Feel free to chat me up about Bethenny Frankel, The Bachelor, or Biggest Loser. As well as Desperate Housewives and Grey’s Anatomy. I so look forward to meeting you all this summer! xoxo

  • Avatar Image Grace Wallace said 1 year, 1 month ago:

Good MOOOORNING all you Rockbrook girls! At least… I think it’s morning there. I’ve been in Florence, Italy for the last four months, and I have yet to really get a grasp on this whole time change thing. I was just beginning to get it, when America had to go and switch to daylight savings time two weeks before everyone else in the world and I got all thrown off again. Is it 6 hours difference? Seven? Is it even April 9th there? Who can tell…
Anyways, my name is Grace Wallace and this will be my fifth summer at Rockbrook and my second as a counselor. I’m seriously SO excited about camp. My friends here are starting to get a liiiittle tired of hearing my camp stories over and over and over again, so it’ll be nice to be around people that actually care about my awesome Granny Bingo anecdotes again. I’ll be Middler line head this summer, so if any of you future Middler counselors (and anyone else as well, of course) have any questions about what to bring (every Halloween costume you have ever owned) or what to expect (awesomeness and ice cream), then please feel free to email me (egw820@gmail.com) or facebook me (I’m on the University of Michigan network).
Ok things about me: I go to the University of Michigan; I’m from Jackson, Mississippi (Fowlkes, I met someone from Oxford in Rome a few weeks ago and about cried I was so excited); I have been known to get so into “An Austrian Went Yodeling” during mealtimes that even my eleven year old campers have asked me to tone it down a bit; I will be teaching drama again this summer because freeze skits are my liiife; I have had, no lie, three dreams this year in which I was eating Illahee Swirl ice cream from Dolly’s; and I will be bringing the first Harry Potter book with me to camp, because too many of my campers last year had only ever seen the movies–a tragedy of epic proportions–and I see it as my civic duty to introduce them to the books.
Ok, that’s all I can think of, but please please please feel free to friend me on facebook (so I can feel cyber-popular), and I can’t wait to meet you all this summer!

    Grace

Happy Saturday, Rockbrook girls and Jeff :-) !! My name is Mallory and I’ll be a ”newbie” counselor at Rockbrook this year. I’ve worked at a variety of day camps but residential will be new for me! I’m SOOO excited! I’m an Environmental Geology major in an education program at UNC-CH and I’m finishing up my junior year. My primary education license will be high school science but I actually want to teach middle school :-) .
Random stuff about me: I’m obsessed with North Carolina Outward Bound School (I did a 28 day course last summer which inspired me to be a camp counselor and be outside a ton ALL summer!!!). I go to Chapel Hill, but I’ll be in the mountains from May 9 til December to go to Highlands Biological Station and camp! Can’t wait to be outside way more! I got this HUGE plastic bin for my camp stuff and I’m painting it. My fave random fact about me is that I can give just about anyone a piggy back ride.
    Some things I love:
-climbing!!! (I’m not that great, but I’m dedicated :-) I was steadily climbing 5.8-5.9s but then got hooked on bouldering so I’m back to 5.7s…) (I’ve been climbing since my OB course)
-running (ideally on trails, slowly, while chatting w/ awesome people and finding cool things like rocks (I’m a geology major at heart…) and fake magenta ray bans). I’m running my second half tomorrow!!!
-dancing (my latest foray in dance was aerial dance – on fabrics, kinda like Cirque de/du (bah, my French has gone downhill) Soleil but WAY WAY less crazy)
    -crafting
    -going on adventures

I can’t wait to meet y’all and have an amazing, fun summer full of making friends, teaching, learning, hanging out with campers and counselors, and silly/awesome/spectacular adventures. Feel free to facebook me (Mallory Nickel, UNC-CH, mnickel@email.unc.edu) or call me (I don’t have texting – I know, that basically means I live in a cave or something…) 919-279-0891. If any experienced Rockbrook ladies (or guys) have any major things that should definitely be on my camp packing list, please let me know! I love to be prepared :-) . I have a ton of old dance costumes so I’ll try to bring those.

    Later!

    Mallory

    Hey Everyone!!

I’m Brittney Holland and this is my first year at Rockbrook! I am beyond excited to get to spend the whole summer at camp, since the other camps I’ve worked have been just a few weeks. I am a freshman at UNC Chapel Hill studying English and Dramatic Art. I hope to be a costume designer, so I am ubber excited about all the dressing up that will be happening this summer!! I love all things artsy and can’t wait to teach the needlepoint class! I guess some random facts are that I am in Kappa Kappa Gamma, I love singing loudly and out of tune, and almost every story I tell begins with “This one time at camp…” I am totally looking forward to spending the summer with all of you and making great camp memories!! Feel free to look me up on Facebook or text me at 336-769-7469!

    Brittney

PS-Mallory, we should totally meet up some time since we are at the same school!

  • Avatar Image Kim Searles said 1 year, 1 month ago:

Hi! I’m Kim Searles and this will be my first year at Rockbrook–and I couldn’t be more excited! I’m a 20yr old sophomore psychology major at UNC-Chapel Hill (Brittney and Mallory we should definitely get together sometime before camp!). Eventually I want to do something where I can work with kids, so I’m beyond pumped I get to spend my summer doing just that :) . A few random things about me:
-I love singing, and I’m in an a cappella group at UNC (It’s called Cadence, look us up on youtube and you can see me bopping around and beatboxing!)
    -I can do the worm
-The smell of rain is one of my favorite things
-I laugh all the time. No seriously, I’m that person that laughs at scary movies…whoopsies!

I can’t wait to meet everybody! Feel free to facebook me (in the UNC-CH network) or email me at ksearles@email.unc.edu

    Hey!
I’m SO excited to be coming to Rockbrook this summer! This will be my first summer as a camp counselor, and I just can’t wait. I am from Utah, about an hour south of Salt Lake City. Am I the only one all the way out here in the west? I lived in Virginia, near D.C., last year as a nanny, and I fell in love with the East Coast! I am a junior at Brigham Young University, and I am studying Family and Consumer Sciences Education. It’s a mouthful, but it’s a lot of fun!! Add me on facebook, or you are more than welcome to email me @ stephanielewis90@gmail.com. To all you seasoned counselors, send me your secret tips and tricks! :) So excited to meet all of you!!
    Crazy facts about me!
    - I have moved 26 times, and I’m only 20 years old! :) I love change, and I love to travel!!
    - I love music! I have played the piano for 15 years and the guitar for 3 and I’ve sung ever since i can remember! I also love being in musicals!
    - I love to sew! I took a clothing sewing class this last semester, and have become a little bit obsessed with revamping my wardrobe, and/or finding things at a thrift store and making them awesome!
    - I LOVE eating at Panera Bread. It is probably one of the things I miss most about living in the east!! Thank heavens Costco sells their broccoli cheese soup!

  • Avatar Image Lindsey Gould said 1 year, 1 month ago:

    Hello fellow staffers!!

My name is Lindsey, and I’ll be a newbie counselor at Rockbrook for the third session. Even though it’s my first time at Rockbrook, I’ve been a camper off and on since my early days in Girl Scouts. Hiking, roasting marshmellows, exploring new places and just being silly are only a few things I’m looking forward to this summer! I just graduated from Boston University where I earned a BA in English with a minor in Theatre Arts. I really miss Boston!!! Right now, I’m earning a Master’s degree in Secondary Education for English/Language Arts. I work full-time as an intern at a middle school in Fairfield, CT and I’m learning a lot.

Just a few things about me: I LOVE to travel – the last place I traveled to was Israel, and before that Ireland (I want to go to Italy next to continue the “I” trend!) I really enjoy acting and being creative, so I’m looking forward to helping out the Rockbrook girls with their skits and plays. Other hobbies include, writing, reading and boating. I am a Disney movie expert, and pasta in any shape or form is my absolute favorite food.

A few more things I’m pumped for this summer:
Possibly doing one or all of the following – Hiking, climbing, rafting, playing Granny Bingo, and exploring the Rockbrook waterfall!

Can’t wait to meet everyone =D
