Summer Camp Musical
Last year our summer camp musical was Into the Woods. Each summer we select a musical for the girls to produce, practice and perform at the end of the main sessions, and in 2008 it was this wonderful play by Stephen Sondheim. If you haven’t seen it, it’s a story that integrates aspect of Little Red Riding Hood, Cinderella, Jack and the Bean Stalk, and Rapunzel. With so many characters involved, it’s a great summer camp drama production because so many campers can have a part, even a singing part. Then the girls are also designing and making costumes, painting scenery, and pulling together all the details of the play. It’s always a treat to see the wide range of talents the Rockbrook campers can show off.
In the next few weeks we’ll be considering different plays for this summer’s camp sessions. If you have any suggestions, let us know in the comments.
Songs for Camp

Lisa Loeb, singer and songwriter best known for her hit song “Stay,” has released a new CD of songs inspired by her time as a kid at summer camp. It’s a fun collection of original compositions and traditional songs all about going away to camp, the friends, the food, the fun, of just being at summer camp. She explains,
“The inspiration was the actual songs based in camp songs. In camp, we have gross-out songs, and ones like the peanut butter and jelly song. One of the things I loved most about camp is that you’re singing all the time. You did sports, and arts and crafts, ate a lot of fun food — you were singing everywhere.”
The CD has some cool guest artists helping out too, people like Steve Martin (who plays banjo) and Jill Sobule. We also like a lot of the great camp lyrics on songs like, “Are You Ready for the Summer?” “It’s not Goodbye,” and “Best Friend.” If you’ve been to camp, you’ll really enjoy this CD.
You can hear the song “Best Friend” over at Lisa’s website. Check it out here.

Summer Camp Songs

It’s one of those things we do at Rockbrook… at meals, on the bus heading to the river, during skits, and all together at assemblies… we sing camp songs! From the crazy and silly songs, like the “coconut song,” to the more serious and traditional songs, like “Rockbrook Camp Forever,” there are easily over 100 different songs in the Rockbrook songbook. When you come to camp, and more than likely come back year after year, these songs really stick in your head, and then years later, maybe when you’re married and have your own kids (!), they’ll pop up again, and you’ll know every word. Ask anybody who’s come to camp, and she’ll have her favorite camp song.
It’s Finally Here!
Finally, the moment everyone has been waiting for was here…and then gone. Banquet was successful! The theme of the night was “Pixar”, which consists of a combination of four movies: “Finding Nemo”, “The Incredibles”, “A Bug’s Life”, and “Monsters, Inc.” The setup for the big night went very smoothly, and by 6:00, the CA’s were dancing around the dining hall in their various costumes waiting for the party to start. The only hang up was a mad dash for soda late in the day; apparently, “it’s not banquet without soda.” It’s a great feeling to see all of the campers’ hard work come together so successfully, and I can’t say enough how proud I was – the CA girls outdid themselves, to say the least. As a reward and camp tradition, Jerry took all of the CA girls out to Casey Jones after the banquet was over. All of the girls couldn’t stop talking about how fast it went by, how they couldn’t believe it was actually over, and how truly excited they were that banquet went so well.
Rockin’ Cardinal – tweet tweedly deet
Hey! I’m Katie Cheney, a C.A. counselor here at Rockbrook Camp, and something kind of sad happened at lunch today: we sang “[6] More Days Of Vacation”, a sly countdown of the days left at camp incorporated into a song, and I realized that we have only a week left. It’s never an easy feat to say goodbye to the campers after such a great summer like this one, and I can only look forward to what I know will be a great last week of camp.
Tonight for dinner, we all donned our poodle skirts, hair ribbons, and James Dean-esque white T-shirts for a 1950′s diner-inspired Restaurant Night. This event has always been one of my favorites, ever since I was a camper – for once we get to order our own meal, whether it be the spaghetti and meatballs or fried fish and hush puppies. The counselors turned into waitresses, which the campers really enjoyed, and furthermore, they got to decide between cake and ice cream sandwiches for dessert. It was a great night, to say the least; a small taste of civilization with a Rockbrook twist, which everyone can appreciate and enjoy.
Until tomorrow…
