Dressed up as a duck at all girl camp

Hey, it’s Lexie reporting to you directly from the Middler line… and beyond!

Many girls held their breath this morning as they nervously climbed the steps of the Dining Hall. The cast list for our play, The Wizard of Oz, had just gone up and everyone was anxious to see. The initial craze of shouts and laughter has died down since breakfast and the girls picked up their scripts at dinner from our director, Elise. Now all they have to do is memorize their lines and attend a few rehearsals, and we’ll have our play ready on Saturday, July 21st, for any and all parents who wish to attend. Good luck, girls!

Apart from the excitement of the play, we all dressed up in our hairiest costumes for Animal Dinner! We had everything from elephants to bears to flamingos dining together in harmony. I think I saw a lion stalking a zebra, but there are no fatalities to report. Stay tuned for more intense eyewitness accounts brought to you from Rockbrook Camp!

Childrens Camp Games

Summer Sports Camp

Basketball! Dodgeball! Kickball! Four Square! Volleyball! And more versions of tag than you can count! There always seems to be some kind of gym sports camp game going on— counselors and campers running around and having fun in the Rockbrook gym. One of the best things to do is to make up a game. Take something you already know, like dodgeball for example, and then change it up somehow, like by having 3 or 4 teams instead of 2, or playing with a really huge ball, or having a “come back to life” ball. Gosh, the options are almost endless!

Popular Summer Camps

Popular summer camp friends

Occasionally we receive great emails and letters from Rockbrook alumni, short notes that remind us of some of the reasons RBC is such a popular summer camp. It’s always fun to hear what people remember, and with camp running every summer since 1921, you can imagine there are a lot of Rockbrook alumni!

Recently we received this wonderful example from a woman who attended in the late 1960′s and early 1970′s.

I remember the smell of camp and the mountains. Meeting and becoming friends. Learning to water ski on Cascade Lake. Climbing out on Castle Rock. Overnights on hiking and canoeing trips. Going into town to the Biltmore to get ice cream. Hiking the Appalachian trail with the Hi-Ups. Making up songs to sing at a meal after a trip out of camp. Getting a package at Good Will! Jerky’s flag lowering at the end of the day and looking out over the mountains.

So many memories!

Bracelet Making Teen Camp

Teen Camp Bracelets

Whoa! How many bracelets is that? It’s such a classic camp activity to make a bracelet. Stringing beads, tying friendship knot bracelets, weaving yarn straps, stamping leather strips… it’s always fun to combine unusual colors, maybe try to spell something, or come up with different patterns. Of course, it’s almost impossible to wear every bracelet or anklet you make (well maybe not completely impossible ;-) ), so you’ve got plenty of gifts for your friends back home. “Hey mom, I made this for you at camp.” Sound familiar?

Childrens Summer Camp

We just love this photo! It’s a great snapshot of what camp can be for children— outside on a warm summer evening, excitement about an upcoming activity, laughing about something silly, forgetting that your hair is totally messed up ;-) and just being with your new best friend.

Youth Camps

girls youth camp

Following our previous post about teen camps, it’s worth pointing out that Rockbrook is sometimes described as a “youth camp” as well. Then when you add “kid’s camp” and “children’s camp,” you realize there are really four different general terms that apply. Between these there are subtle distinctions at best, and with girls attending camp as young as 6 and as old as 16, any of these labels would apply to Rockbrook. Of course, they would apply equally to boys camps as well, but that’s another distinction altogether :) .
