All the Staff of Camp

Another common question we hear is about the number of counselors at camp. At any girls residential camp like Rockbrook, it is important to consider the camper to counselor ratio. With 200 campers enrolled in each session, people are often surprised to hear that we have close to 100 employees during the summer, with about 50 of those being cabin counselors. The others are special activity staff members, maintenance, housekeeping and kitchen staff, and other support staff members. The typical cabin arrangement is 2 counselors and 8 campers per cabin— a 1:4 ratio. A couple of the cabins are larger, and in that case, we’ll have a CIT (counselor in training) stay in the cabin as well. 26 different camp activities, 200 campers, 200 acres of forest, and almost 100 employees… there’s a lot going on!
Best Girls Camp

What is the best girls summer camp in North Carolina? That’s really hard to say, of course. There are so many great traditional overnight girls camps out there, ones with beautiful facilities, outstanding counselors, and a diverse program of activities, the differences can be subtle and often boil down to what’s emphasized and what stands out as a strength at any particular camp. Many do consider Rockbrook (at least “one of”) the best girls camp(s) in the south, with its equestrian program, ceramics program, adventure activities, and historic wooded setting. In fact, Rockbrook was just featured in a newspaper article for its traditional architecture.
Another way to put it is to say the best camp is the camp you love. It’s the camp for you, the one where you feel at home with good friends and fond memories. For a camp with a long history like Rockbrook, it’s easy to understand why so many consider it the best.

Our good friend Lilly Sagar sent a report from Lancaster, England where she is studying abroad this semester at University of Lancaster. She is having a great time so far, meeting people from all over the world. Her classes start next week, so she is enjoying traveling and seeing the sights before the hard work begins. Former Rockbrook counselor Anna Wells is also studying in Lancaster- maybe they can teach some Rockbrook songs to their fellow students!
