Here you can learn more about Rockbrook's campers— where they are from, news about their lives back at school, their writings and perspectives about camp, their parties and reunions, and why girls love this camp so much.

An Atlanta Winter

We’ve received another winter wonderland photo submission! Camper Anna Grace, an Atlanta resident, sent us a photo of her winterized hometown. How beautiful are those clouds? That sunset is pretty spectacular too! This photo reminds us of Twilight time after dinner, when you can play games and hang out on the hill with your friends before Evening Program.

What’s your favorite time of day at camp? Is it early in the morning, when the air is cool and you’ve got a day full of fun ahead? Or is it Free Swim, when you’re speeding down the water slide into the lake? Or maybe it’s whenever your favorite activity period is– Riflery? Pottery? Tennis? Whatever you choose to do on any given day at Rockbrook, you’re going to find yourself exploring new things, mastering new skills, and most importantly, having a ton of fun.

In the last Rockbrook newsletter, we invited you to send us photos of your hometown during the winter. Camper Kade is the first to submit photos of her winter wonderland! We were delighted to find an email from Kade waiting in our office inbox this morning, and wanted to share her beautiful Georgia winter with you all. We’d love to see more photos of your winter landscape. Feel free to send your photos to office@rockbrookcamp.com. Thank you Kade for showing us your winter wonderland!

A nationally recognized expert on children’s and young adult books, Kathleen Odean is a fantastic resource for all-around awesome books for younger readers. A librarian for 17 years, Odean is well-versed in children’s and young adult literature, and her knowledge of this genre has reserved her a place on many prestigious literary committees. Hey Rockbrook girls– you know that special gold medal that is sometimes printed on the cover of really great books? That’s a Caldecott medal, and Odean was actually a member of the committee that awards those standout books! Odean has also done some writing of her own, having written four books in her career. Her books act as guides for young readers, both girls and boys, and their parents. You can find a complete list of her work here, and click here for a sample list from one of her books, Great Books for Girls. We’re a big fan of Odean’s selection because they are packed with fun, exciting stories, as well as empowering messages for young female readers. Girls run the world!

Also, go ahead and bring your books to camp! Whether you’ve got summer reading for school or you’re just reading for fun, you can join the “Rockbrook Readers”, a group of campers that meets daily on the porch of the Hillside lodge to hang out and read!

A Ride on the Red Mare's Back by Ursula LeGuin (ages 5-9)

Sable by Karen Hesse (ages 6-10)

Island of the Blue Dolphins by Scott O'Dell (ages 9-12)

Yolonda's Genuis by Carol Fenner(ages 10-13)

Dealing with Dragons by Patricia Wrede (ages 10-13)

Rockbrook girls can run! You may have read about camper Eliza winning her school track meet a few blog posts back, and we’re proud to report that camper Gracie from Greenville, SC has similar fast feet! A few weeks ago, Gracie participated in the Caine Halter Lungs 4 Life 5k, a race that raises money for lung cancer research. Over 1150 people attended the event to walk, run, and support the cause to end lung cancer. Gracie pedaled her way around the course and came in third in her age group! With a finishing time of 27:02, Gracie kept a quick 8:43 mile pace and she was the only 9 year-old in the top three; the other runners were 10 years-old! Way to go, Gracie!

Since the beginning of their fall travels on the road, Sofie and Frampton have had so much fun hanging out with RBC girls and their pets! Big dogs, little dogs, crazy cats, lazy cats, and even a pair of very social guinea pigs (One named “Chocolate” and the other named “Chip”), Rockbrook girls call a variety of different animals family members. In fact, camper Elley from Montgomery, AL is such an animal lover that she had her birthday party at the Humane Society! When preparing to come to camp, the thought of leaving behind your pet for a few weeks can bring a smidge of sadness, so when settling into the cabin on Opening Day, you’ll find that lots of campers bring photos of their furry best friends to Rockbrook. Below are some of our favorite pet portraits!

Friendship Animation Video

The digital photography activity at camp is always coming up with new projects and games for the girls, different ways to incorporate taking (making!) pictures with other active ideas. It might be a scavenger hunt, a color or texture study, or simply a collage of some sort. One cool example of this is making a stop-motion animation video. This involves taking a series of photographs and stringing them together in a sequence. If the objects in the scene change slightly in each picture, the resulting video looks like they are moving. One way to do this is to build something out of play-doh, a snowman for example. Using this stop-motion animation technique, you can make a video where the snowman comes to life!

Here’s an example of this technique used to create the illusion of people moving. This past summer, Hannah, Briana and Catherine made this short video about friendship. You can really tell they had a great time making it. Take a look!

From Faraway Cities to Distant Towns

With the fall season underway, Frampton and Sofie have hit the road traveling around the States! Stopping in various cities to host camp parties and camper reunions, they have had so much fun hanging out with Rockbrook girls during the school-year. On their most recent trip, Frampton and Sofie traveled to Wilmington, NC and got to spend part of their afternoon tossing the frisbee on the beach with camper Peyton! An avid frisbee thrower, Peyton’s skills put Frampton and Sofie to work! Afterwards, everyone met up at campers Zella and Liza Jane’s house for the camp party. After spending the afternoon at the beach and the evening in the company of dear Rockbrook friends, Sofie and Frampton couldn’t have asked for a better trip. Check the website to see if there’s a camp party near you. We’d love to see you there!
